Renovation Waste in Singapore: A Practical Checklist
Renovation generates far more waste than most owners expect: old cabinets, tiles, wood, plasterboard and packaging. Plan for it before hacking starts.
Ask your contractor what's included
Many quotes cover debris removal, but some charge extra for stairs, long carry distances or heavy materials like tiles and concrete. Get it in writing.
Check building rules
HDB estates and condos set rules on working hours, lift protection and debris disposal. Management may require you to book the service lift or loading bay.
Separate as you go
- Metal (old grilles, pipes) can often be recycled.
- Wood and offcuts can be collected separately.
- Hazardous items such as paint, solvents and asbestos-containing materials need special handling and are not taken by regular pickups.
Schedule pickups in phases
One pickup after hacking, one after carpentry, one at the end. Keeping debris out of the way speeds up every trade that follows.
Keep your receipts
A record of what was collected and where it went protects you if management or neighbours ask questions later.
