How to Dispose of a Sofa or Mattress in Singapore
Bulky items don't fit in the chute and they don't fit in the blue bin. If you're staring at an old sofa or mattress in your flat, here are the realistic ways to get rid of it in Singapore.
1. Check your town council's bulky item scheme
HDB estates are managed by town councils, and many run a bulky item removal service for residents, sometimes with a limited number of free collections a year. Slots can be booked out, so ask early and check what size limits apply.
2. Donate or sell if it's still in good shape
A clean, undamaged sofa can go to a charity shop or a marketplace listing. Mattresses are harder: most donation points won't take them for hygiene reasons.
3. Use a private pickup service
For condos, move-out deadlines or heavy items, a pickup service saves the hassle. A good one gives you a fixed price from a photo, carries the item down for you, and tells you where it went.
4. Don't leave it at the void deck
Dumping bulky items in common areas is illegal littering and can lead to fines. It also makes your neighbours pay to clear it.
Quick prep checklist
- Take a photo of each item and note the dimensions.
- Clear a path to the door and check lift access.
- Condo? Ask management about service lift or loading bay bookings.
- Remove cushions, drawers and loose parts so the crew can move it quickly.
